Devadaasi (Temple Prostitutes)
Devadaasi (Deh wa dha si) or Temple prostitute. Devadasi literally means: servant of god, but that is not what they are. In the Southern part of India, there is a temple where young girls are dedicated to their goddess by their own families, to serve as temple prostitutes. This is another way of oppressing and abusing these Dalit women and children sexually. This has been happening for centuries in the name of their goddess and the name of religion. Deep poverty is also a strong contributor to this practice. We have been working with these woman for the past 10 years. We hold conferences almost every year for them and for their children, where many come to a saving knowledge of the truth. We have been able to follow up with a number of these women after the conferences, and helped them leave their prostitution lifestyle behind. We also try to provide help and education for their children. Our short term teams also have an opportunity to minister to these women. We desire to expand our outreach to build communities for Devadaasis and their children, where they can be provided for, trained, receive emotional healing for their deep scars, have their dignity restored, be freed from their lifestyle, and blossom into productive human beings.
